Legends Marathon Countdown Begun

legendsmarathonThe Legends Marathon organisers and sponsors launched the “37 Days Countdown” to the 5km Fun-Run, 21.1 km half marathon and 68 km ultra marathon to be held in the Buffalo City Metro on October 5, 2014.

The Countdown was launched at the East London Airport August 27, at a media briefing with  sponsors which include the Eastern Cape department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC).

Luthando Bara, the Founding Chairman at Legends Marathon said; “The countdown is a sign to the athletes that we are ready, they need to also start getting ready for the 5th of October.

“We want to use this countdown to prepare the local athletes and the general public to stay in shape,’’ and adds; “This marathon offers 1 million in prize money for the athletes, people must support this marathon and everyone taking part in it’’.

DSRAC H.O.D Mr Matutu said; “This marathon is named Legends Marathon because as you know that Eastern Cape is a home of legends, so we wanted to keep that legacy as we know the Eastern Cape has legends in sport, politics and religion.

“As the department this marathon means we have a mandate to promote active citizenry, some participate to win prizes, others do it for health and some support the cause for cancer,’’ said Matutu.

Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board’s Pumeza George whilst at the Countdown launch said; “If you’re looking at the legends marathon, you are looking at a marathon for a worthy cause.

“One of our assignments as a gambling board is to make sure that in communities where we have a footprint there should be improvement in socio-economic livelihood taking place’’.

The 2014 Marathon will also feature prominent runners such as defending champion Collen Makaza from Zimbabwe, Lusapho April, Ludwick Mamabolo a previous comrades winner and former Proteas fast bowler Makhaya Ntini.

Closing date for entries; Ultra Marathon (68 km): Wednesday September 24, Half Marathon (21.1 km): Monday September 29 and the 5 km race can be entered at Jan Smuts Stadium: October 3 – 5.

Starting times; 6:00am eBisho Stadium, 7:00am Turnbull Park and 9:00am Jan Smuts Stadium, eMonti respectively.
