Four boxers from the Eastern Cape represented South Africa in the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland. Thulani Mbenge, Ayabonga Sonjica, Siphiwe Lusizi and Luvuyo Sizani qualified for the games after having won at the Fifth edition of the Africa Nations Cup Boxing tournament.

Thulani Mbenge brought home the Bronze Medal; Thulani said: I was confident that I was going for a Gold Medal but, however, I am not disappointed by the fact that we brought home the bronze medal. This means a lot to me and is a step in the right direction.

The MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Dr Pemmy Majodina, addressed the boxing administrators and fans that were at the East London Airport to welcome them, “Although the other three boxers did not bring back medals, they have fought a good fight and have made us proud. We will continue supporting the sport as government and we wish to ask the community to give support to the boxers all the time, said the MEC.
